Coral Sea Cable laying completion and photo exhibition marked in Canberra
Speaking during the occasion, the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women, Senator the Honourable Marise Payne reiterated the importance of the project for rural empowerment and development in PNG and Solomon Islands adding that this project will help boost small businesses and people’s accessibility to better public services.
The Acting High Commissioner of Solomon Island to Australia Mr. Walter Diamana thanked the government and people of Australia for their support and assistance through this transformational initiative. Solomon Islands is pleased that this game-changing project will drive our country into the digital age, bringing the world of opportunity closer to us and unlock our country’s human resources potential. It will enable some possible solution for the challenges of our times, and shaping new ways of conducting businesses.
The Coral Sea Cable connects high speed internet from Sydney to Port Moresby and also to Honiara with domestic connections to Auki, Noro and Taro, envisioning more than half of our country’s population connecting to the internet grid by next year.
The general public would now look forward to further celebrate the Coral Sea Cable System completion in Solomon Islands with the customer launch in 2020.
Other guest speakers during the occasion includes the CEO of Vocus and the PNG High Commissioner in Canberra. The program was attended by senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the PNG High Commission in Canberra, Solomon Islands High Commission in Canberra, Vocus Group Ltd, Solomon Islands Submarine Cable Company, Kumul Telikom Holdings, and also fellow Solomon Islands community members in Sydney and Canberra.
