Malaita Communities welcome Winrock’s SCALE-NRM initiative

A team from Winrock International’s Strengthening, Capacity, Agriculture, Livelihood and Environment – Natural Resource Management (SCALE-NRM) program based in Auki, Malaita, has successfully completed one of their first awareness and community consultation programs, in East Fataleka and East Kwara’ae regions. 

The team met large gatherings and conducted awareness in 14 centers from wards 14,15, 16 and 4, attracting attendances from over 100 villages. 

The team raised awareness on objectives of SCALE-NRM program and roles and responsibilities of Malaita communities in the implementation of the Program in order to help protect natural resources for all Malaitans and achieve maximum benefits for families and communities across Malaita.

The awareness and consultation activity was strongly supported by villagers, who had been keen to have clarity regarding the SCALE-NRM program.

Community, tribal and church leaders expressed readiness to work with SCALE-NRM in implementing its activities. 

Community engagement and awareness is one of the key activities of SI SCALE-NRM program. It seeks to ensure communities have access to the information they need to be able to participate effectively in making decisions regarding the project proposed activities.

SCALE-NRM program is designed to address the underlying causes of forest degradation in Solomon Islands, with a focus on Malaita Province. The program will implement a range of activities to improve forest governance and ensure sustainable forest management.

The national project, implemented by Winrock International, initially targets Malaita and is made possible by the generous support of the American people to develop and implement sustainable models for improved natural resource governance in Malaita Province and throughout Solomon Islands”.
