Man, 40, faces serious allegation for attacking brother
A man in his 40s in Temotu Province is facing a serious allegation of assaulting his brother at Naban Village in the Bekapoa area of Santa Cruz Islands on 21 November 2019.
Provincial Police Commander in Temotu Province, Superintendent James Toaki says, “The man was arrested on the day of the alleged incident and charged with one count of grievous harm pursuant to section 226 of the Penal Code. This is a serious charge that carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment if you are found guilty by the court.”
“The defendant is currently remanded in the Correctional Service Centre in Lata as police investigators are continuing their investigation into the matter. He is due to appear in court on 3 December 2019,” says PPC Toaki.
It is alleged that on 21 November the defendant argued with his brother and defendant was believed to be under the influence of liquor during the incident. It is further alleged after some time of arguing, the defendant allegedly grabbed a bush knife, chased his brother and attacked the victim on the back and on the left side of his left leg. Bystanders intervened and pulled the suspect away.
PPC Toaki would like to advice the general public of Temotu Province to solve any grievance in a peaceful manner than resorting to violence.
”Problems have solutions so let us work together to promote peaceful and cohesive understanding for safer communities in Temotu Province.”
“Taking the law into your own hands will not help but having a second thought when you are angry and resorting to peaceful means is what is required of us.”
Police at Lata further appeal to members of the community in the entire Province to join hands together and fight crime to make Temotu Province a safe, secure and peaceful place to live and enjoy.
