Media Association of Solomon Islands calls on the leading newspaper Solomon Star to show some courtesy instead of using COVID-19 as an excuse to justify the termination of its long serving Editor, Ofani Eremae.
President Charles Kadamana describes the termination of Mr Eremae as inhumane and unfair in the way his termination letter was issued.
Mr Eremae has contributed a lot in ensuring the integrity of the paper for more than 16 years and should be accorded the natural justice and not unfairly dismissing him.
For the newspaper blaming the cash flow situation caused by the coronavirus state of emergency for the decision is unjustifiable.
Not only the procedure of delivering the termination letter and barring him from office is inhumane that shows lack of responsibility on the part the newspaper management.
Mr Kadamana advice media industries in Solomon Islands to treat their journalists including editors with fairness.
In times when the country is facing the impact of the COVID-19 media has an important role to play and the right thing for the newspaper to do is giving justice for its outgoing editor.
