Two Solomon Islands match officials Bernard Mutukera and Rex Kamusu have been selected as candidates for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar and FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania 2021.
Assistant referee Mutukera was selected as one of the three referees from Oceania for the FIFA World Cup project among top referees from other FIFA member associations and confederations.
The Western province lad made his first appearance on the world stage officiating at the Poland FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2019.
Kamusu has world cup experience in his CV when he officiated at the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Colombia.
The duo is part of exceptional referees around the world who have a chance to make it to the world stage if they passed online training leading up to the main events.
FIFA will be tracking the progress of the candidates closely by doing the following:
- Organising monthly online seminars. In these seminars, performances in local and international competitions, as well as areas of improvement, will be discussed via Zoom due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.
- Depending on the situation, a physical seminar might be considered where we can meet the
candidates personally and execute an intensive programme (technical and physical).
This competition calls for match officials who are top-level athletes and have a deep understanding of futsal and football combined with excellent technical knowledge.
Only the best referees will be selected for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania 2021 and FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022.
